HuMUS Final Conference: 21 November 2025, Brussels

21 November 2025, 09:00-16:30 CET | European Committee of the Regions, Brussels, Belgium

The HuMUS Final Conference brought together policymakers, soil stewards, municipalities, regional authorities, researchers, farmers, urban planners, and civil society to share knowledge and outcomes from the three-year Horizon Europe project HuMUS – Healthy Municipal Soils. This event highlighted the value of participatory governance for soil health, while identifying practical and policy-level bottlenecks in funding, regulation, and implementation. Participants explored how to scale and replicate the HuMUS methodology, which empowers local and regional communities to co-develop soil solutions adapted to their specific territorial contexts.

The event was a success, with 100 participants, 25 speakers, 18 project partners and 34 pilots who actively shaped this conference! Thank you to all who participated and supported the HuMUS Project in the past 3 years.

HuMUS results: Three years of soil health across Europe

What if the key to healthier ecosystems lies beneath our feet? And what if your municipality could actually play a crucial role?

Over three years, HuMUS has advanced soil health across Europe through community action, policy, and innovation. So, what have we achieved? HuMUS works with 34 pilot projects from across 16 countries, of which 13 are from the EU, and 3 are non-EU. All the pilots are experimental and time-bound local examples of how HuMUS fosters participatory governance of soil health issues at municipal and regional levels.

In its final year, HuMUS is now proudly sharing the results from these participatory processes, including:

-The HuMUS Soil Steward Training Course, training local leaders on soil care

-The HuMUS visual tool to facilitate integrated assessments for regional well-being and sustainability

-The Territorial Management Agreements, laying the foundations for local long-term cooperation and commitment to healthy soils

-The Catalogue of Good Practices and Policies, supporting healthier soils through proven approaches

Soil Steward Training Course

The key objective of this training course is to provide knowledge and tools mainly to civil servantsâ?”working at regional and/or municipal levelsâ?”and enable them to become a Soil Steward. A person that carefully, responsibly, and voluntarily contributes to spreading her/his knowledge and experience regarding soil health. Simultaneously, they serve as an advocate for raising awareness about soil health and care within the local or regional community.
